Vlada Brofman Release Event for "Innermost"

Please press the reservations button on our website to rsvp!

The concert presents Vlada Brofman's new album Innermost (Сокровенное). Born and raised in Moscow, Russia, Vlada Brofman has spent the second part of her life in the US, mostly on the East coast. Fully fluent in English, Russian, and French, she appears equally at home in different musical traditions: jazz, bossa nova, French chanson, and the lyric-centered vision of singer-songwriters… Her primary training in acting has been complemented by jazz voice lessons; as a result, her dramatic performance endows each song with rich color and vocal subtlety. Each song is performed as a mini-play, a small drama for the initiates which presents the most stylistically appropriate arrangement and style for it. The concert will also include songs in English (originals, jazz) and French chanson.

In Innermost, Vlada digs deeply into her Russian heritage, bringing us some profound singer-songwriter songs along with poems by Russia’s exceptional Silver Age poets set to music by several composers. Alexander Alabin, a multi-talented pianist and guitarist from NY, wrote the arrangements and recorded many of the album’s tracks. Together with Andrey Matlin (bass, flute, keys), they create a limpid, intimate, and scintillating landscape, from which, through Vlada’s protean voice and performance, emerges a cast of lively and touching characters.

"Innermost combines the warmth of home and the excitement (and sometimes even terror!) of adventure in a changing landscape. That change comes from the personas Vlada introduces in her songs: the aging actress; the maestro; the Devil in the shape of a beautiful woman. The lyrics are dynamic, and the skillful musical arrangement underscores the distinct personality of each song. But it is Vlada's own personality that truly allows these songs to shine: the persona of the storyteller, sometimes wise, sometimes mysterious; always with a hint of mischief and joy behind any dramatic turn of phrase or melody. Vlada's voice deftly carries the listener from one adventure to another all the while reminding him or her that each adventure is but a story to tell.”

Brazilian percussionist Tulio Araujo returns to New York City with a project that is two years in the making: His new album Monduland, that reflects his deep studies of harmonic, melodic, rhythmic, and metric modulation.

Tulio, who has degrees in percussion, music production, and sound engineering, has studied with some of the most renowned music masters, including Ian Guest, Santiago Reyther and Marcos Suzano. He created this idea of a contemporary jazz ensemble built around his main instrument, the Pandeiro, a tambourine-style frame drum ubiquitous in Brazilian music. That's what he called The Dobradura Project.

After 4 years traveling alone and exchanging experiences with local musicians, Araujo is coming with his own quartet, from Brazil, for the first time to the United States. It's an unmissable concert, full of tunes from his 3 released albums, along with a rainbow of surprising grooves and harmonic colors.

Pete Muller & Friends

Pete Muller has been a resident artist at Caffe Vivaldi for over 10 years.

Some people know Muller as a pioneer in quant investing. Not as many know that, while he was emerging as a giant in the financial world, he was also busking in New York City subways, sharing his original and wholehearted songs with harried New York City commuters.

Muller, trained early in jazz improvisation and honing his skills hosting a songwriting circle in New York City, his music has captured the attention of such varied outlets as The New York Times and Forbes Magazine. Inspired by the likes of Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin, and Elvis Costello, Pete's lyrics tend toward the honest and the straightforward and his latest album, Two Truths and a Lie, was produced by the Grammy-winning Rick DePofi.

Most recently, as a Berklee College of Music Trustee, Muller partnered with the music school and the City of New York to renovate and revitalize the storied Power Station Recording Studios in New York. With an emphasis on “reinventing” music education, the new facility will concentrate on continuing education for school-age children, teacher training, and providing internships to current Berklee students.

Do better. Keep going. Muller's message is as simple as it is inspiring.

Ester Wiesnerova (1994) is a composer and vocalist from Slovakia. She fuses jazz with Slovak traditional music, while adding a little bit of a folky singer/songwriter flavor to it. However, as she likes to say, the genre is not important. What is important is what the music can create and change in us. Although Ester currently resides in the US, she has toured and performed in South Africa, Cyprus, Israel, Italy, Central Europe etc. Her other achievements include Forbes’ “30 under 30″ award (30 most successful Slovaks under the age of 30) and “the Best Newcomer of the Year” award in the competition New Faces of Slovak Jazz. Being a part of the prestigious Berklee Global Jazz Institute, she studied under the guidance of jazz masters such as Danilo Perez, Joe Lovano, George Garzone etc. Ester is currently a graduate student at the New England Conservatory, majoring in Jazz Composition.
