Melinda Hughes

With David Shenton, piano

Ahead of her two shows at the Metropolitan Room, British soprano and satirist Melinda Hughes will present a half hour of brilliantly crafted songs about the relationship between the UK and the US; the declining British Aristocracy, selfies and Donald Trump’s incessant tweeting. Melinda draws inspiration from Weimar composers such as Mischa Spolianksy, Kurt Weill and Friedrich Hollander. This is political satire at its most poignant and fun. She will be accompanied by David Shenton.

Melinda has written and performed at numerous International Festivals. Her CD Smoke and Noise (Nimbus) won critical acclaim leading her to appear on BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4 with Barry Humphries. A graduate of The Royal College of Music, Melinda toured Europe for three years as the soloist to the famous violinist Andre Rieu. She has sung many lead operatic roles in more than forty countries and will be appearing on BBC4 Television series about Weimar Cabaret in summer 2017.

"If they were playing anywhere near me, I would run, not walk to see them.”
